OpenAI unveils GPT-5.5, its most powerful model yet
The new model arrives just six weeks after GPT-5.4, focused on agentic coding and knowledge work.
San Francisco, April 24, 2026 — OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.5, its newest artificial intelligence model, which the company describes as its “smartest and most intuitive” yet. The release lands only six weeks after the debut of GPT-5.4, a turnaround that highlights the fierce competition among frontier AI labs over enterprise customers.
According to the official announcement, GPT-5.5 brings faster agentic coding, stronger computer use and improved knowledge work. The model is available to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users across ChatGPT and Codex, while GPT-5.5 Pro is reserved for the higher Pro, Business and Enterprise tiers.
A sprint between labs
TechCrunch and CNBC report that OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as an AI “super app”, expanding into search, shopping, office automation and integration with Google Drive, Docs, Sheets and Slides without separate authentication steps.
Alongside GPT-5.5, OpenAI on April 21 released gpt-image-2, which the company calls the first image model with native “thinking” reasoning capabilities baked into the architecture, allowing it to plan and refine outputs before generating.
“GPT-5.5 is a step towards assistants that plan and act on the user’s behalf, not just respond with text,” the company said in its official post about the launch.
Analysts cited by Fortune note that the cadence of updates, now measured in weeks rather than quarters, is putting pressure on Google, Anthropic and Meta to keep pace at a time when AI compute has become these firms’ single largest operational cost.
