PRISHTINA — Kosovo’s trade deficit widened in March 2026 to roughly 563.5 million euros, according to Kosovo Statistics Agency data carried by economic media. The gap is some 5.2 percent larger than in the same month last year.

Exports reached 88.4 million euros while imports stood at 651.8 million euros. Although exports posted strong growth of 18.2 percent, they covered only 13.6 percent of imports, outlets citing the agency report.

The composition of trade looked familiar. Base metals and articles made from them dominated exports, followed by plastics, processed foods and textiles, according to Kosovar media coverage.

CEFTA and EU remain core partners

Exports to CEFTA countries grew about 21.8 percent, with North Macedonia, Albania, Serbia and Montenegro as the main partners. Sales to European Union markets rose around 12.9 percent, with Germany topping the list, business outlets report.

Analysts note that despite stronger export performance, Kosovo’s economy still depends heavily on imports of high-value items such as cars, oil, energy and pharmaceuticals. They argue for clearer industrial policy to support domestic production and reduce import reliance.

According to media coverage referencing the Statistics Agency, exports grew faster than imports, but the low coverage ratio shows that Kosovo’s productive base remains weak and dependent on foreign suppliers.

Private-sector representatives have urged the government for incentives for producers, affordable credit and stronger investment in logistics infrastructure. Without these, analysts warn, the trade deficit will continue to weigh structurally on long-term economic growth.
