PRISHTINA — Kosovo inspection bodies carried out 66 visits to construction sites within 48 hours, ordering work to stop at 27 of them for documented violations, Telegrafi reports. The blitz is part of a broader campaign to enforce market rules and improve workplace safety.

Officials say the most common violations involve missing permits, breaches of occupational safety standards and lack of technical documentation for the materials in use. Several sites were closed pending compliance with legal requirements.

Construction is one of the main contributors to Kosovo’s GDP but has consistently been flagged as one of the most problematic in terms of standards enforcement. Site accidents have been frequent in recent years.

Industry and unions react

Construction associations welcomed the inspections but called for equal treatment among operators, warning that monitoring should not become selective pressure. Workers’ unions urged tougher penalties and a larger inspectorate.

Meanwhile, the government has flagged plans to digitise the construction permitting process and supervision so that documentation can be verified in real time, narrowing the space for firms that operate outside the legal framework.

According to Telegrafi, the inspection authorities stressed that out of 66 visits in 48 hours, 27 sites were ordered to halt work, with controls set to continue in the coming days.

A comprehensive report on construction-sector compliance, including fines issued and cases referred to other agencies, is expected in the coming weeks. The government’s stated aim is to lift the quality of construction work and reduce the number of serious accidents.
