PRISHTINA — Kosovo Customs has announced a package of projects worth roughly 14 million euros, financed through European Union grants, Telegrafi reports. The projects aim to modernise customs infrastructure and increase efficiency at border crossings.

According to the institution, the funds will go into scanning equipment, document digitisation systems and staff training. Customs officials describe the support as an important contribution to alignment with European standards.

Modernising border crossings is a sensitive issue for Kosovo, given the economy’s reliance on imports and the importance of the flow of goods across borders. Long waiting times have been a frequent complaint from transport businesses.

Easier trade flows

Business representatives welcomed the projects, expressing hope they will cut truck waiting times at borders and improve supply-chain predictability. The logistics sector has long been calling for investment in infrastructure and technology.

Cooperation with the European Union in the customs area is also seen as a step towards deeper integration into regional trade mechanisms, particularly under CEFTA and the Stabilisation and Association Agreement.

According to Telegrafi, customs representatives stressed that the roughly 14 million euros in EU grants will enable a major capacity upgrade, benefitting both businesses and consumers.

The projects are expected to be implemented in phases, with completion within the next two years. Customs has flagged consultations with chambers of commerce and business associations to pinpoint priority improvements.
