PRISHTINA — Fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids are not necessarily beneficial for everyone, according to an article published by Telegrafi on April 24 summarising the conclusions of the latest international studies.

According to the report, routine use of omega-3 capsules has risen sharply in the last decade, including in Kosovo, while manufacturers’ claims of cardiovascular protection are not fully confirmed by the latest data. Several major studies have shown that benefits are more pronounced in specific groups of patients with heart disease or very low blood levels of omega-3.

When Supplements Are Worthwhile

Cardiologists in Kosovo have stressed for years that supplements should be recommended on a case-by-case basis rather than as a universal preventive measure, while natural sources of omega-3, such as fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel), nuts and flaxseeds, remain the first choice.

According to Telegrafi’s paraphrase of the researchers’ conclusions, “omega-3 capsules are not a universal substitute for a balanced diet”, and the best results are seen in people with a real deficiency or specific cardiac pathology.

Telegrafi reminds readers that supplements are commercial products and that their quality depends on the manufacturing and storage process. Use without medical supervision can lead to side effects, including the risk of bleeding in combination with anticoagulant medication.

Consumer health education is one of the points stressed by the National Institute of Public Health, which has repeatedly called for greater awareness of food labelling and the proper use of supplements. Pharmacists have stressed that many citizens buy products based solely on advertising, without consulting a doctor or nutritionist.

The conclusion of the article is clear: a balanced diet, physical activity and regular visits to the doctor remain the most reliable formula for long-term cardiovascular health, while supplements only have a role when they are medically indicated.
