PRISHTINA, April 26, 2026 — The Kosovo Police have arrested a man suspected of domestic violence, with firearms and 57 rounds of ammunition seized during an authorised search of his home. The case was confirmed by the Regional Police Directorate spokesperson, who said the matter has been forwarded to the Basic Prosecution.

The intervention came after family members filed a complaint and expressed fear for their safety. Specialised units responded within minutes and secured the scene without injuries.

Domestic violence remains a challenge

Kosovo Police statistics show a high number of domestic-violence cases each year, with women remaining the primary victims. Shelters protecting survivors operate under difficult financial conditions and are often at full capacity.

The current case again raises the issue of firearms licensing and the control of weapons stored in private homes. Security experts stress that the presence of firearms in domestic-violence contexts dramatically increases the risk of fatal incidents.

The police spokesperson stated that “the suspect was arrested immediately, while the weapons and ammunition were seized for examination,” urging victims of violence to report any case without hesitation to the emergency number 192.

The Kosovo Women Network has consistently called for stricter enforcement of protective measures and faster judicial procedures. According to organisation reports, removal orders are often issued late, putting victims at risk.

The Ministry of Justice has announced a new legislative package being finalised to strengthen victim protection and increase sanctions for repeat offenders. The government has also pledged additional funding for shelters and psycho-social services.

Investigations continue and the suspect is expected to appear before a pre-trial judge within 48 hours.
