PRISTINA — Following the defeat to Turkey in the World Cup play-offs, coach Franco Foda and captain Vedat Muriqi spoke about the pain felt by a group of players and an entire country. According to Nacionale, they described the night as a dream that did not come true, but also as a reference point for the future of Kosovan football.

Foda stressed that the defeat comes after an extraordinary journey in which the team showed it could compete with the strongest national sides. He admitted, however, that at the key moments Turkey were more efficient and made better use of their experience in major competitions.

Muriqi, for his part, said he is proud of his teammates and that none of them should hang their heads, because the road does not end there. His leadership both on and off the pitch has become increasingly visible.

Lessons for the next cycle

The coaching staff are already analysing the play-off matches to draw lessons for the next qualifying cycle. Weak spots in the closing stages, defending set-pieces and managing the game after conceding will be in focus.

Supporters, although disappointed, welcomed the dignified reaction of the players after the match, with applause heard in certain sections of the stadium. The message conveyed was that this generation holds great promise for the future.

Foda underlined that defeats are part of the journey for every developing national team and that the side will come back stronger, while Muriqi added that belief in Kosovo’s potential should not waver after one painful night.

Despite the disappointment of the moment, Kosovan football emerges from this cycle with identity, self-belief and a player and coach determined to keep building the national team’s name.
